EXPERIENCE PROFILE-IN ISRO-ISAC
M.V.Kannan joined ISRO Satellite Centre
(ISAC) (Then Indian Scientific Satellite Project
(ISSP)) on 2nd November 1973 after
serving a private company SIETEX , TRANSDUCERS
MANUFACTURERS for 4 months. He started his
career in the field of Structural Analysis. During
the period (till 1981) he contributed in the analysis
of structural systems for Aryabhata, APPLE
(ABM) sub-structuring and development of computer
software tools in FORTRAN for finite element analysis
and mathematical computations, development of
tapered beam finite element. The element was
used and also incorporated in in-house S/C structural
analysis module .Moreover, exclusive static, free
vibration and response analysis program was developed
by him for stochastic tall chimney using this
tapered beam element (tuned to this application)
for Prof. Durvasula, Aero Department of Indian
Institute of Science, Bangalore.
M V Kannan was mainly responsible
as Project Coordinator for Design calculations,
Static and free vibration FEM analysis of ANURADHA,
cosmic ray experiment (3SAN-21)
which was flown in space shuttle in the year 1980
and was brought back to earth after conducting
100 hrs of experiment in space. He worked in all
main frame computer systems namely IBM360, 370,
DEC-10 and UNIVAC during software development/analysis
period and also familiarized with finite element
tool SAP-IV, popular at that time.
From 1981 onwards till December
2002, he served in experimental structures
in different roles/capacities as Head, Experimental
Stress Analysis , Team leader for structural
static load testing of Spacecraft structures of
SROSS, IRS, INSATs class of satellites, corrugated
composite cylinders etc and involved in all structural
development tests. Besides he is an expert
in Reflection photo elasticity technique for whole
field stress analysis and established the
facility in structures. He was responsible in
setting up of massive test rig for static load
testing of high ton spacecraft structures. He
also provided consultancy to one of private firm
in Bangalore namely Mini-Machine Tools.
During his tenure in structures group, he successfully
handled and realized SROSS satellites structures
as Project Engineer,Programme Manager and Deputy Project
Director (Mechanical Systems).He was Deputy
Project Director for INSAT-3B and GSAT-1 spacecraft
structure and responsible in successfully qualifying
and delivery of the system.
From January 2003, he headed Projects
Division , responsible for planning, scheduling
and effective tracking etc of all spacecraft programme
of the centre in multi-project environment (concurrent
25 projects) and supportive to top management
in overall handling of projects effectively. He
officiated as Member-Secretary in various
Project Management Boards of Spacecraft and also
expert member in test review committees .
He is a recipient of ISRO Team Achievement
award 2008. He also served as Deputy Project
Director, Technical Services for Astronaut Training
Facility (being set up near Bengaluru International
Airport) of Human Space Programme of ISRO-INDIA.
M V Kannan has successfully gone through
General Management Programme in IIM, Bangalore
in 2004 and also First NIAS-DST course in 2004
besides other short programmes on personality
development time to time. He was in-house
faculty member for all ISRO Induction Programme
IITP .
He participated as Indian delegate
from ISRO in 16th IAA Human Space Symposium
held in Beijing, China during the year 2007.
He has planned and organized many events of ISAC
& ISRO (Technical seminars (National/International)
& symposium, National Science Day, Technology
Day, cultural events, felicitation functions etc)
in various roles and most memorable being the
opening ceremony of 58th International Astronautical
Congress 2007 held in Hyderabad.
